Setting Goals, Baby Steps or Overwhelming?

Setting goals is easier said than done for most people.  Most of the time it's that way because saying you’re going to lose 65-70 pounds seems overwhelming.  I mean, it will take months to do that. Maybe some of us need to think back to one of my favorite 1990’s movie quote, “Baby Steps.”  Who says that we have to set one weight loss goal? Why can't we take baby steps?

So, that is what I am doing. Yes, ultimately I want to lose 60 pounds, but I found it easier to set smaller goals while still aiming for the big goal. For example, I decided that I am going to lose eight pounds and do this by February 19, 2010. Babysteps.   It is overwhelming to think that I need to lose a total of 60 pounds.  When looking at it, eight seems more attainable than 60, right?  This means that I would need to lose 1.3 pounds a week. I am going to add a little exercise into my routine, so I feel this is an attainable goal.  Achieving the smaller goals build up your enthusiasm and your self-esteem which will help you to be more confident.  You will also be more motivated and encouraged to accomplish the smaller goals than just one.

So, what is your goal weight?  Is it to lose the 5-10 pounds you gained over the holidays or is it to be in a healthy weight range?  I’m trying to do both!  I also think that losing 10 percent of your body weight is a great way to get a jump start.  Once you’ve lost the 10 percent, then you can set a goal weight. First thing you need to do is determine what your goal weight should be.  There are a couple of ways.  One is determined by your height and body frame.  A website I found useful to find a healthy weight range was healthchecksystems.com.  Another way is by your BMI (Body Mass Index).  There are many websites that discuss BMI.  I found that the Mayo Clinic website, mayoclinic.com/health/bmi-calculator, was very simple to use.  So now that you have decided on a healthy weight that is attainable, you should determine the number of calories needed in a day.  I mentioned it last week, but sparkpeople.com is a great tool for determining your healthy weight, BMI and calories.  One of these days I’ll write a blog about sparkpeople.com

I found that telling someone about my goal helps me stick with it and holds me accountable. Now that I've told the whole world, I'm glad I went with a smaller number. I told my friends Ashley and Teresa.  I know that both will ask me how I am doing from time to time during the next six weeks.

Tell me your goals?  Ask me how I am doing on mine.
